About the Photographer
Marianne Pernold Young, shown here in a self-portrait,
was born in Austria and immigrated to the US when she was
10. She was a freelance photojournalist in Washington, DC in
the ‘70s and chronicled the campaign of President Jimmy
Carter. She attended a summer workshop in 1973 with
photographer Ansel Adams in Yosemite National Park and the
following year was invited to return as the workshop /
student liaison.
Marianne has abandoned the celebrity and news scene in favor
of the changing moods of the seacoast. She specializes in
portrait, scenic and artistic photography and is equally
skilled in both color and black and white mediums. Her work
is often exhibited
locally and has included the collections: Portraits of
Notables and Quotables of Portsmouth ('88), Family-Owned
Businesses in Portsmouth ('92) , a collection of women
retailers in Portsmouth ('00), They Remain to Fish, a
collection of fisherman from the Portsmouth Fish Co-op
('01), and From Farm to Market ('06). For the past three
years Marianne has been the official photographer for the
NHSPCA’s fundraiser, Pets and their Families.
Ms. Pernold Young's work has appeared in several national
